Of all the superfoods that you should be eating for optimum health, those containing Omega 3 fatty acids should be at the top of your list. Many foods are now fortified with Omega 3 fatty acids, some in very small amounts. While the FDA has not set a recommended daily value, scientific bodies like the International Society for the Study of Fats and Lipids, suggest that you should consume a minimum of 500mg per day.

Crab Smart Natural has 80% of that amount per serving.

Omega-3 and you

You’ve heard a lot about Omega-3 fats, but what does it mean for you and your diet? Here are some basic facts:

  • Omega-3 oils are considered essential fatty acids, which means that your body needs them but cannot synthesize them. They can only be acquired through your diet. Omega-3 essential fatty acids are vital for metabolism.
  • Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) helps reduce inflammation in the body. Scientists are studying its effects on a number of inflammation-based diseases, from arthritis to coronary heart disease.
  • Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), one of the Omega-3s, is a primary structural component of the brain and other body parts. Scientists are studying its effects on mood, hyperactivity and Alzheimer’s disease, among others.
  • EPA and DHA from fish oil is much more efficient than plant-based Omega-3s, such as Alpha-linolenic acid, or ALA. While EPA/DHA are readily available for use in the body’s metabolic processes, ALA must first be converted to EPA and DHA for this purpose. The conversion rate is very inefficient (less than 5% of ALA can be converted to EPA/DHA).
  • For that reason, consuming EPA and DHA from fish oil is the best way to get the health benefits you want from Omega-3 fatty acids.
  • The Institute of Medicine at the National Academy of Sciences had not set a Reference Dietary Intake (RDI) or Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA). Many products that contain small amounts of EPA/DHA (60 to 100 mg per serving) have made claims to be a good source or excellent source of Omega-3, but without an established RDA these claims are misleading.
  • While there is no FDA recommended amount, ISSFAL, the leading global scientific body that studies fats and lipids (oils) has recommended 500 mg of Omega-3 per day and the National Institute of Health suggests an even higher amount.
  • Shining Ocean’s Crab Smart Natural (400 mg) and Kanimi Deluxe (250 mg) product lines have significant amounts of Omega-3.
